Applying for a sport scotland School Sport Award

  • Once all actions detailed in your development plan are complete you can then complete a final assessment.
  • By applying for an award you are agreeing to your level of award being shared on our website
  • Your award score and assessment answers will determine which School Sport Award you will be eligible to apply for.
  • All schools must apply for their School Sport Award before June 30. We will be unable to accept any applications after this date.


Minimum requirements to be eligible to apply for each award level;

  • Bronze School Sport Award
    • Establish a school sport committee led by pupils if your school does not already have one
    • Complete the online self assessment and achieve an overall score of 25% or above
    • Complete the School Sport Award development plan for the academic year
  • Silver School Sport Award
    • Establish a school sport committee led by pupils if your school does not already have one
    • Complete the online self assessment and achieve an overall score of 60% or above
    • Complete the School Sport Award development plan for the academic year
  • Gold School Sport Award
    • Have an established sport committee led by pupils
    • Complete the online self assessment and achieve an overall score of 75% or above
    • Be delivering 2 hours per week of physical education to every pupil (primary) or 2 periods per week of core physical education to every pupil in S1 to S4 (secondary)
    • Desirable that a minimum of 40% of the school role participates in extra curricular sport.
    • Have regular* extra curricular sport on offer to pupils in all year groups (P1-7 for primary and S1-6 for secondary).

* regular = minimum of 3 sessions attended per pupil.


Applying for a Bronze or Silver School Sport Award

  • Please submit your completed assessment by 30th June
  • No evidence will need to be submitted as your award is based on self-assessment


Applying for a Gold School Sport Award
(this does not apply to schools applying for a Bronze or Silver School Sport Award)

  • If you have scored high enough to be eligible for a Gold School Sport Award you will be asked to go back through each section, upload evidence to support your application, add supporting statements from staff and pupils, and upload your development plan.
  • Guidance and help on what evidence to submit to support your application can be found on the sportscotland website http://www.sportscotland.org.uk/schools/school-sport-awards/guidelines/
  • All schools that submit an application for a Gold School Sport Award will be considered by an external review panel. The panel will review and base their decision on the following
    • ┬áthe assessment answers
    • quality of evidence for each core area
    • strength of development plan
    • strength of supporting statements
  • The panel will award all applications with either a Silver or Gold School Sport Award. The panel’s decision is final.


Presenting of Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels

  • All schools will be notified of their award level in August 2017.
